The 4 Pieces of the Health Eating Puzzle

As a kid I often did jigsaw puzzles with my mom or sister. I loved having a process to follow (corners first, then the border, group similar colors/patterns, do the sky last!) and I got so much satisfaction from fitting the right pieces together. Little did I know that years later, I would be building my own process for solving a different kind of puzzle, the puzzle of healthy eating.

The Healthy Eating Puzzle has four essential pieces and when you get those pieces to “fit” together, you can achieve effortless healthy habits for life.


 

#1) WHAT:

  • Prioritizing Nutrient Dense Foods 🥦

  • Balancing Macronutrients 🍚

  • Honoring Personal Preferences 🍕

Prioritizing nutrient-dense foods means opting for the good stuff—fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins. But also…life is too short to never eat cake, or tacos, or pizza. That's where balancing macronutrients and honoring personal preferences come into play. #2) HOW MUCH:

  • Energy Balance ⚖️

  • Portion Size 🍽

  • Meal Frequency 🕒

While I’m not here to say there’s anything “bad” about eating your weight's worth in guac, we do need to consider energy balance. It doesn’t mean you need to count, weigh or measure anything, it just means finding the right balance between the calories you consume and the energy you burn. HOW:

  • Mindful 🧘‍♀️

  • Joyful 🎉

  • Judgement-Free 🚫

Let's ditch the guilt trip, shall we? Healthy eating should be a joyful and liberating experience. Embrace mindfulness, savor each bite and cultivate a positive relationship with food. Banish the notion that you've committed a sin by indulging in your favorite treat. WHY:

  • Physical Hunger 🤤

  • Practical Eating ⏰

  • Emotional Eating and Cravings🍩

The final piece of the puzzle is understanding why we eat. Is it because our stomach is rumbling with physical hunger? Are we snacking out of habit or convenience? Maybe we're chasing after a particular flavor or seeking comfort in food during emotional times. By dissecting the reasons behind our eating habits, we gain clarity and can make conscious choices that align with our goals and overall well-being.


 

Now, the best part about working on this puzzle is that you don't have to solve the entire thing at once.

While all four pieces are essential for effortless healthy eating, focusing on just one or two can make a significant impact on your health. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither are new habits. So be kind to yourself, celebrate every small win and enjoy the process.
