"Maybe, what's really holding you back is the idea that you need to be fixed." — Vironika Tugaleva
Last week, my mindfulness teacher shared the below poem and it reminded me of a story that is often told about the Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh.
Once, at a retreat, he asked a group of students, "who here has a toothache?"
No one raised their hand.
Then he asked "how many of you noticed that you didn't have a toothache?
Again, no hands went up.
Then he said,
"Isn't it remarkable?
When we're having a toothache, we know that not having a toothache is a wonderful thing.
Yet when we don't have a toothache, we're still not happy.
A non-toothache is very pleasant."
How often do you feel gratitude for all the "non-toothaches" in your life?
Do you notice all the pleasantness that can be found RIGHT NOW?
Or do you let your mind obsess about what could be new, better, different, FIXED?
