If You Want to Change Your Life, Change How You Look At Things

“All things are subject to interpretation. Whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.” — Friedrich Nietzsche

Here's a funny story.

When Alejandro and I first started dating we went rock climbing with a small group of people and 2 instructors.

We all took turns climbing while the rest of the group watched on and gave words of encouragement.

During Alejandro's turn, he started strong, but then quickly lost steam.

Everyone was cheering for him to keep going, but eventually he grabbed the belay rope to help him get to the top of the rock.

When he got back down to the bottom, the people in the group were patting him on the back, saying "good job", etc...to which he frustratedly replied,

"Ah, but I had to cheat!"

But the thing is, his "ch" sound is much more like a "sh" sound. 🙊

So everyone thought he said "Ah, but I had to Sh*t"...which, given the context of the situation, was simultaneously hilarious and off putting.

And since it was a group of strangers, no one was quite sure how to react.

...until I clarified that he had said CHeat, not SH*t.

Then lots of laughter ensued and it's since remained an ongoing joke.

It has also continued to serve as a reminder of the power of interpretation.

How often have you said a statement like:

"I don't have enough ____ (time/money/energy)"

OR

"I can't ____ (lose weight/be healthy/change)"

👉 Are those statements true?

Like 100%, without a doubt, black/white kind of true?

Or are they just your interpretations of your current circumstances?

Women who are stuck in the dieter's mindset often complain about their circumstances and use them as excuses for why they "can't".

❌ They can't say no to wine at dinner because their spouse is having a glass.

❌ They can't go to bed earlier because work is too crazy.

❌ They can't exercise at home because they would have to move the coffee table out of the way (Yes, this is an excuse I've heard before).

They use their circumstances as excuses for why they are stuck and why they "can't" take action.

But we aren't limited by our circumstances, we are limited by our interpretation of them.

As the late, great Wayne Dyer once said, “Change The Way You Look At Things And The Things You Look At Change.”

Are your "problems" really problems?

Are your "limitations" really limitations?

Or are you just seeing them that way? 🤔

👉 Are you hearing "SH*t" when the universe is actually saying "CHeat"? (metaphorically, obviously)

And are you allowing yourself to be at the mercy of these interpretations by believing them to be true and using them as excuses for why you "can't"?

The "Inner Work" pillar in my 4-pillar weight loss method is all about shutting down these limiting beliefs and shifting your focus to what you CAN do, because most of the time, the thing that is holding you back from getting what you really want in life isn't:

❌ Your job

❌ Your spouse

❌ Your genetics

...It's YOU. 😬

It's not trying to see (or hear) things in a different way and it's choosing to focus on problems rather than solutions.

So, you can continue to be frustrated with all of the things that are getting in the way of your success,

Or you can try changing your interpretation of your circumstances.

And if you need help with this...I happen to be a pretty good interpreter. 😜
