How to Stop Being a Slave to the Scale

"Self-worth comes from one thing, thinking that you are worthy." — Wayne Dyer

Last week a new client sent me an email.

She had just weighed herself...and to say that she was disappointed with the result would be an understatement.

She "did everything right" the whole week, but the scale didn't budge.

She was frustrated, angry and heartbroken.

"Do I need to start hormone replacement therapy?"

"Should I cut out carbs?"

"What if I add in more cardio?"

"TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"

This response is pretty common amongst women who are still trapped in a dieter's mindset.

For them, the scale is the end all be all.

It dictates their mood.

Measures their self-worth.

And is the sole data point used to drive their decision making.

So when they see a number on the scale that they don't like, they feel defeated.

They jump to conclusions, they start to panic and...

But the scale is simply a tool that gives us ONE data point,

It doesn't tell the whole story.

Kind of like how looking at ONE bank statement won't tell you anything about your financial health.

My husband and I are in the middle of planning an out of state move, plus we just filed our taxes...so finances have been top of mind lately.

I couldn't help myself... I have multiple accounts... Personal savings and checking accounts, a 401k, business accounts, credit cards, investments, etc. Let's say I made a transfer from my checking account to pay off some credit card debt. Looking ONLY at my checking account would show a lower balance than the day before...which would be a "bad" thing, right? But looking at my credit score would tell a different story. And neither of those sources would give me any information about how much money I had in my savings or investments. I'd need to look at ALL my accounts in order to analyze my financial health. And even with all of that information, I still wouldn't be able to measure: My happiness How many people love and care about me Or the impact that I make in the world

👉 The same goes with the scale.

It's simply ONE "account" that we can monitor. But it doesn't tell us about all the other health "accounts", like: Your energy "account" Your fitness "account" Your confidence "account" Your sleep and recovery "account" Your mental and emotional health "account" It simply tells us how much you weigh on the planet earth... NOT your beauty NOT your talent NOT your potential NOT your strength

And most definitely not your WORTH.

So if you feel like a slave to the scale, I encourage you to zoom out... And before you go into full on panic mode the next time you see a number you don't like, ask yourself,

Is this ONE number telling me the whole story?

And,

What other "accounts" do I need to factor in here?

Because life is so much more beautiful and complex than a number on a scale.
