"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears." — Nelson Mandela
"Either/Or"
This is the mindset that can make or break your progress — especially around the holidays.
It's the thinking that:
Either you’re 100% on track...OR you’re completely off.
If you’ve ever said, “I’ll start in the New Year” or “I’ll start on Monday”, chances are you were caught in this kind of thinking.
Another clue that you may be in an ‘either/or' mindset:
👉 You eat something “off your diet” and instead of getting right back on track, you label the remainder of the day as "ruined" and eat/drink with reckless abandon.
Sound familiar? 😬
This mindset is sneaky because when you’re “ON” or “GOOD”...you feel like you are "all in" on your goals and it seems like you’re making amazing progress.
BUT the problem is...it’s pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to maintain in the long run. One little slip-up can make you feel like a failure and want to give up — which can mean undoing ALL of the progress you've made.
But there IS good news. There’s a happy medium to be found that’s built on MODERATION. And it’s all about making healthy choices — choices that add value, energy, and positivity to your life... Choices that actually make you FEEL BETTER… Without being “ON” or “OFF” or “GOOD” or “BAD.”
For example, during the holiday season that could mean:
Choosing to say “yes” to a slice of your aunt’s famous pumpkin pie without feeling guilty
Choosing a wine spritzer instead of your uncle’s infamous eggnog because you know the heavy cream, extra sugar and double shot of bourbon will make you feel lousy 30 minutes later
Choosing to squeeze in a brisk walk when you can’t get to the gym, so that you can still get your blood pumping even when time is tight
Choosing to get to bed by 10pm so you are rested and energized for whatever tomorrow brings, or
Choosing to drink a glass of water before having your morning coffee so you feel hydrated and refreshed as you begin your day.
So, instead of falling for the mindset trap of 'EITHER/OR',
👉 You can decide to make deliberate choices on a case-by-case basis.
And I hope that you decide to CHOOSE to enjoy the coming holiday without guilt and to TRUST yourself to make decisions that support your best health (mentally, physically AND spiritually).
If you do, you won’t lose your progress, you’ll still be able to enjoy your favorite foods AND you'll free yourself from that “good” or “bad” cycle of thinking.
And if you want to learn more about how to find peace AND success in that happy medium of moderation,
